Let’s do a stepback.   On the 27th of April 1993 Zambia lost the most talented generaton its footbal has ever seen.

After taking off from Liberville in Gabon a faulty Zambian military plane carrying eighteen players of the national team crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing all people on board. Thirty victims.

1993, Gabon. Kalusha Bwalya most famous Zambian player at the time visiting the graves of his teammates.

They were on their way to Senegal for a world cup qualifier match. Among those who perished were the coach, Godfrey Chitalu, and Kelvin Mutale one of the best player of the team. Zambians were lost in a real shock and the whole football movement has been crippled the crash. It was a real tragedy of world football, comparable to the heartrending european ones of the past, happened to A.C. Turin in 1949 and to Manchester Utd. F.C.in 1958.

A.C Turin team perished on the 4th of May 1949 on a hill called Superga near Turin

Manchester Utd. team who died in 1958 in Munich at Riem Airport

Back in Gabon.    After nineteen years Zambia football is living a dream after beating Ivory Coast on penalties in the africa Cup Final. Final score, Zambia vs Ivory Coast 0-0 ( Zambia won 8-7 on penalties). This eventually happened back in Gabon were the plane crashed, with a very young team of unknown players. Only one of them is playing in Europe, in low level Swiss Premiership. Even more, they beat the all odds favourite Ivorians that played with players as good and famous as Didier Drogba (Chelsea F.C.) and Yaya Tourè (Manchester City F.C.).

Kalusha Bwalya, now president of the Football Association of Zambia, was not on that flight because of his contract with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, he had planned to make his own way to Senegal.

“I’m happy that the boys were able to come here on merit to reconnect with the past” said Bwalya.
